Then we have to reject "cloud computing" and software subscription schemes, and always choose user-controlled software. If we want the latter alternative, we need to demand that both the operating system and all applications can be backed up, installed and re-installed whenever the user wants, and that all software can be run indefinitely on compatible hardware without any ties to any manufacturer or any need for software subscriptions.
